Some of the things you should start purchasing now..

Some of the things you can start purchasing now each week to make things a little easier when the time comes are as follows: A box of nappies, Sanitary pads ( you can actually work this one out as to how long your periods last, mine usually lasts for 7 days so after having baby I would bleed for 8 weeks, I also had a friend that usually only had her period for one day and she only ended up bleeding for one week after baby was born, so it definitely depends on the individual.)

Another thing you have to keep an eye on after the birth as well is if you end up getting fevers, temp etc. As what can happen is some of the after birth can actually still be inside the uterus and can make you very ill, so get yourself off to the doctor as soon as possible if anythings not quite right, he/she will normally put you on a course of antibiotics and you will be sent in for a scan to see if that is what the problem is, If there is a certain amount still there they will book you in for a d and c ( dilation/curette) to fix the problem.

Ok back to your weekly or fortnightly list, breast pads a box each time and also one pack of the reusable ones also come in handy. Any little items that you can get on special at any stage are always a wonderful saving as well. Make sure you lay by your bassinet or cot whichever you are going to be using. Do these things as you are able to afford them as you have plenty of time to get yourself organised. Also get your hospital bag ready over this time it saves so much hassle when the time draws closer.

Napisan or the cheaper version of nappy soak is fine and a nappy bucket with a lid, clothes softener there is one lot that is especially for newborn sensitive skin and is quite cheap, the nappy soak is wonderful stuff, all you have to do each morning is just 3/4 fill the bucket with cold water and the napisan (the right amount of course) and during the day/night any of baby's singlets, stretch n grows, muslin wraps, washers, baby towels, your reusable nursing pads etc can be put straight into the bucket and then put straight into the washing machine the next morning ready for the next lot. Just add the softener before turning the machine on, it saves a lot of work and clothing is sterile and clean. If you don't do it like this you end up getting bogged up with a lot of washing believe me, its true, tried and tested :)

Anyway those are the weekly things to gather just do nappies each pay if you can, from what I can remember I think I went through 11 boxes of newborn huggies, then start buying the next size up. With the other items get something,  just one thing extra with the nappies if you can, whether it be the sanitary pads or the breast pads or a cream or something for bub. And by the time baby arrives you will both be fine. Actually if any of your friends or family ask what you need for baby it's usually a great idea to say nappies. Also don't forget to get your family to organise a baby shower for you, it's not just an American thing now and it's great fun.

My first experience

Hope your all feeling well girls, what a beautiful experience you are in for. Those are the most precious times I can remember is when you first get to hold your beautiful little bundle after all of that hard work. The first time for me I was only 15 and at that age your still a child yourself. But I was able to keep my situation a secret from my family up until I was 7 months pregnant, at which time my mother said to me your putting on a little weight aren't you, your not pregnant are you? I said yes I think so.

For some silly reason I thought if I didn't think about it perhaps it wouldn't happen. Plus I thought my parents would kill me, but they were so wonderful and so kind to me.  I used to get breakfast in bed every morning and we started getting baby things organised as there wasn't alot of time left. But OMG!! when the night finally arrived I wouldn't tell them because I was so terrified of what was about to happen (reality kicked in). So by the time the pain was that unbearable I had to say something and off we went to the hospital it was winter time and there was snow on the road, as mum and dad were packing me into the car dad handed me a hot water bottle, which was so comforting and off we went. It was about a half an hour drive but it seemed to take forever.

I kept asking mum to stop the car as I really felt like I needed to go to the toilet badly but she wouldn't stop (just as well as I know that feeling was it was time to start pushing). Once at the hospital I felt a little more at ease as thats where they know what they are doing. I was then prepared and taken into delivery. Your told the pain is bad but you don't realise how bad! The breathing certainly helps though and all I could think of with each pain was that the baby is closer to being here. Finally my beautiful little girl arrived she was 6lb 13oz, it was such an amazing experience, because all of that time I was pregnant it was just like a lump in my tummy that moved,  but then wow it was a baby from me, sounds silly I guess but being that age I guess reality doesn't actually hit you until you see for yourself. Best experience ever and I was so proud of my beautiful little girl.

The only bad thing was this nasty old sister that must have had a thing about young mothers, she was an absolute horror, I still remember her grey curly hair and pointy glasses and she was short and fat. Anyway she was very rude and nasty. Funny thing was that my Auntie happened to be part of the hospital board so she came in and saw me and as soon as the old bat turned up, she gave it to her, telling her how disgusting the ward was, she ran her finger along the bar under my bed to show her the dust that had accumulated under there and that she had better get her ward sorted out to the right standards or else!

So having been told who my Aunt actually was, she then changed her attitude toward me and was so much nicer. So it would've been a lot worse for young mothers back then that had no support as there were some terrible women working in those places at that time (that was back in 79). Everything has changed now and a lot of them are so kind and caring, you will no doubt catch the odd one, but go for it and report them because people like that should not be working in a place like that.

Anyway take care until next time and drop me a line if you want would love to hear how your going :) and don't forget to ask your doctor about the folic acid tablets you should be taking everyday, these are a must while pregnant. Mothers that haven't taken them for baby,  it has been found to cause spina bifida in babies. So get onto it if you haven't already as some doctors I have noticed do forget and I have had to ask for them myself. Heres a handy link for you to look at http://www.essentialbaby.com.au/

Free samples for mother & baby..

Theres some really good places on the net that will send you out free samples to try out on your new baby, so before the birth have a look through and ask them to send you out any samples they may have. Some places you will have to email but other places just get you to put in your name and address and they will post you out different things. A few of the places I have received samples from are named below so please check them out.

Mysavings.com-they have a special part filled with heaps of baby offers (nappies, creams all sorts of goodies)

Johnson and Johnson-just go through to there site and tell them you are expecting and do they offer samples to try, they send you some nice things.

Aromababy-this is the best stuff, but again you will have to ask if they offer samples, the samples they sent me were beautiful and that's all I used on my last baby after trying it.

Huggies and Pampers have baby clubs you can join, remember to save all your bar codes from any huggies products as you can then purchase different things through the club for baby.

Coles actually had a baby bundle for new babies at one stage if you joined their club.

There is probably a lot more on offer now, so the best thing to do is look up all the different baby brands you know of and go to their sites and email them, otherwise just look up free samples for baby. The samples come in really handy for the nappy bag when you are out visiting etc. Have fun checking these out.

This is especially for all of the ladies soon to be new mothers..

First of all congratulations girls how exciting!! You will naturally be feeling very overwhelmed with the idea for a start off, but as your baby grows and you get used of the idea it starts becoming fun buying tiny little outfits & getting everything prepared for your new addition (that's after all the sickness has passed of course.) I  have had 6 children and no pregnancy or birth experience is ever the same. Now there are alot of women out there that have had babies & this may be a wonderful way for you to tell some stories or give advise to these ladies or any information that may help them out in anyway. As you have been through this special time in life yourselves and I know you all have alot of interesting and helpful hints for these new mothers to be..So please feel free to share with these girls. And for you mummys to be ask anything you want & i'll be honest and tell you anything I can.
2 hints from me at the moment is make sure you rub olive oil or something similar into your tummy & breasts everday as it does help with the skin stretching and takes the itching away, also a heat pack will help relieve your sore backs (great for in the delivery room too.) Also if anyone has any private questions that you don't really want to place on this blog please feel free to email me anytime.
Stay happy.
